چکیده

hyrcanian forests in northern slope of alborz support high bird richness and abundance same as central of europe. in this study, efficiency of different methods including fixed-width transect, variable-width transect, fixed-radius point count and variable circular plot samplings were compared in order to present the most reliable methods for surveying and monitoring of diurnal forest birds in forested alborz mountains. three 1 km long transects and fifteen fixed and variable radius points which located 250m far from each other along the transects was performed. each transect and point was visited 3 times during august 2008. one-way anova was performed to analyze the data. the results revealed significant differences of bird richness and abundance between the points and transects sampling methods (f3,104=9.85, p=0.00 and f3,104=57.35, p=0.00 for bird richness and abundance respectively). in contrast, no significant differences in richness and abundance between variables and fixed transects as well as between fixed-radius point count and variable circular plot samplings were found. overall our results suggest transect method yielded greater bird richness and abundance than point count method, therefor, they can be more useful for preparation birds listing in forest ecosystems, but this also depends on habitat characteristics.

Comparing fixed and variable-width Gaussian networks

The role of width of Gaussians in two types of computational models is investigated: Gaussian radial-basis-functions (RBFs) where both widths and centers vary and Gaussian kernel networks which have fixed widths but varying centers. The effect of width on functional equivalence, universal approximation property, and form of norms in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS) is explored. It is pr...

Efficiency of Fixed-Width Transect and Line-Transect-based Distance Sampling to Survey Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus spadiceus) in Peninsular Malaysia

Reliable survey method is very important to estimate wildlife population. In this study, fixed-width stripand line-transect samplings were simultaneously used to yield population estimates on oil palm plantation. The latter was found to be more accurate but less precise than the former based on the Per cent Relative Bias (hereafter PRB). Using the strip-transect, an overall density and abundanc...

Performance of transect and point count underwater visual census methods

A simulation approach was used to study bias and variability of density estimates of fish using the transect and point count underwater visual census methods. Three experiments were conducted to examine the effects of fish density, sampling effort, and the speed of fish in relation to the observer. Fish density and sampling effort did not significantly bias estimates of fish density using eithe...

Asymptotic Expansions for Fixed Width

A sequential procedure for setting a fixed width confidence interval for the natural parameter of an exponential family is proposed and studied. Average confidence levels are considered instead of the classical confidence curves. The procedure is shown to perform very well in a simulation study. AMS Subject Classification: 62L12.

Adjusting count period strategies to improve the accuracy of forest bird abundance estimates from point transect distance sampling surveys

Although point transect distance sampling methods have become widely used in surveys of forest birds, there has been no attempt to tailor field methods to maximize the accuracy of abundance estimates by minimizing the effects of violations of the method’s critical assumptions, which are: (1) birds at distance 0 m are detected with certainty, (2) birds are detected at their initial location and ...

Fixed-Radius Point Counts in Forests: Factors Influencing Effectiveness and Efficiency

The effectiveness of fixed-radius point counts in quantifying abundance and richness of bird species in oak-hickory, pine-hardwoods, mixed-mesophytic, beech-maple, and riparian cottonwood forests was evaluated in Arkansas, Ohio, Kentucky, and Idaho. Effects of count duration and numbers of stations and visits per stand were evaluated in May to July 1991 by conducting approximately 1000 50-m (or...
